FTA Tribal Transit grant applications close August 25

Eligible Tribal applicants have until 11:59 p.m. Eastern on August 25 to submit complete proposals for approximately $18.95 million in FTA competitive funding.

The Federal Transit Administration's fiscal year 2026 Tribal Transit Competitive Program closes at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, August 25. The FTA funding notice makes approximately $18.95 million available for eligible rural public-transportation planning, capital and operating projects.

The deadline is the immediate operational fact. Applicants that have not already completed their Grants.gov package have little time to resolve validation or registration problems, assemble attachments and confirm that the submission has been accepted rather than merely uploaded.

Who may apply and what the program supports

Eligible applicants are federally recognized Indian Tribes and Alaska Native Villages, groups or communities identified by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. FTA also requires applicants to have the legal, financial and technical capacity to administer federal funds and to provide transit service in a rural area with fewer than 50,000 residents. A service area may include urban portions if rural areas are also served.

The program supports activities eligible under the Formula Grants for Rural Areas Program, including:

  • transit planning;
  • vehicle and facility capital projects; and
  • operating assistance for rural public transportation.

Planning awards are capped at $50,000. The notice sets no minimum or maximum award for capital and operating projects, although FTA may award less than the amount requested. Applicants may identify a scalable alternative and should explain the minimum amount needed to preserve the project's objectives.

FTA reports that the fiscal year 2024 competition funded 26 Tribes with $9.6 million. Awards ranged from $49,696 to $957,052. Those prior results provide context, not a guarantee of the size or likelihood of a 2026 award.

Final submission checks matter

The controlling Federal Register notice requires electronic submission through the Grants.gov “APPLY” function. Mail and fax submissions are not accepted. The opportunity number is FTA-2026-002-TPM-TRTR.

A complete proposal includes the SF-424, the supplemental form and required supporting attachments. The FTA notice says applicants must be registered in the System for Award Management before submitting, include a valid Unique Entity Identifier and maintain an active SAM registration. Because FTA says SAM registration commonly takes several business days and may take longer, an applicant without an active registration may face a material completion barrier this close to the deadline.

Before the final submission, the project team should verify:

  1. the applicant and service area meet the stated eligibility rules;
  2. the budget separates planning, capital and operating requests when more than one project type is proposed;
  3. the annual operating budget and all required attachments are included;
  4. the SAM registration and Unique Entity Identifier are current; and
  5. Grants.gov shows a successful, time-stamped submission before 11:59 p.m. Eastern.

Why transit leaders should pay attention

For Tribal transit programs, this competition can support more than equipment purchases. It can help sustain service, develop a plan, improve facilities or expand access in rural communities where other mobility options may be limited. The short remaining window makes document control and submission verification as important as the underlying project narrative.

Applicants should rely on the FTA notice and Grants.gov record for final requirements. If a material requirement remains unresolved, the named FTA program contact in the notice is the appropriate source for authoritative clarification. As of the August 24 research cutoff, FTA still listed August 25 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern as the closing time.
